Maxime Bender was born in Luxembourg. Music has always been a big part of his life, as he started playing the saxophone at age 6 and never stopped. He was influenced by all kinds of musical genres throughout his life, from Rock and Pop to Classical and Jazz. He went on to study music in the conservatory of Luxembourg and completed his higher education in Strasbourg, Brussels and Cologne. He is now dedicated to his music as a professional musician, leader of several projects and as a saxophone teacher.

Maxime has enjoyed quite a career as the leader of his bands, namely the Maxime Bender 4tet, the Maxime Bender Orchestra and the Maxime Bender Group featuring David Binney. The style within these projects varies greatly from more spontaneous and free with the quartet to written and arranged with the big band. He takes advantage of the different natures of these projects to showcase his different facets as a composer and a leader. He has released a number of albums, the most recent being “Path of Decision” under the French label Laborie, the latest recording of the Maxime Bender 4tet.

Today, Maxime is well known in the jazz scene of Europe, having played at several of Europe’s biggest festivals, such as Jazz à Vienne (France), Calvi Jazz Festival (France), Ghent Jazz Festival (Belgium), Gaume Jazz festival (Belgique), Edinburgh Jazz Festival (Scotland), Bratislava Jazz Festival (SK), Kaunas Jazz Festival (Lithuania), Leverkusener Jazztage (Germany), Burghausen Jazzfestival (Germany), Jazz Festival Agadir & Tanger (Maroc) and Athens Jazz Festival (Greece) as well as many clubs and other venues across Europe.

Maxime has also had the chance to share the stage with a number of great musicians throughout his career such as DeeDee Bridgewater, Nigel Kennedy , Donny McCaslin, Lalo Shifrin, George Duke, David Binney, Will Vinson, Grace Evora, BAP, Wolfgang Niedecken, Philipp van Endert, Pablo Held, Frederik Köster, Sebastian Sternal and Jonas Burgwinkel to name only a few.

Maxime constantly seeks to evolve, be it as an instrumentalist or as a composer. Maxime has build a network around his own production company, MB Productions, and with a number of partners throughout Europe working on management, booking, distribution, press and more, Maxime is always ready to take his music one step further and bring it closer to an ever growing audience.

Tenor and soprano saxophones, Hammond organ, guitar, drums: Maxime Bender and his Universal Sky quartet from Luxembourg have joined CAM JAZZ’s roster of musicians with a lively, energetic, diverse and, above all, intense album.

Through mostly original tracks, he and his fellow travellers weave a fabric of timbres that turns from intangible and airy like an echo (Holocene) into energetically pure in the intermittent rhythms and contrasts between the sax and the other three instruments (Missing Piece). Bender can also perfectly alternate and balance purposely written ensemble obbligatos with solos and improvisations working as the hub of a track (Infinity, Glow). ... read more
